Have you ever read The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis? It is a book I read a long time ago and is very interesting as to how it pertains to what is going on today. The devil writes letters revealing all of his secrets & tactics on how he deceives the world. One of the points he reveals is that he gets people so focused on horrible events happening in other parts of the world that is completely out of their control. The people get so consumed and blinded by it. We are so obsessed with control… and I for one have a problem with this! I feel the need to want to control everything.
I see this so much right now don’t you? We have the news, and our cell phones right in our hands almost all the time. We scroll and we consume constantly. News updates, articles, podcasts, video’s all almost being acquired instantly from all over the world. We don’t know what is true and what is false. We are being inundated with sad and terrible news. We are attached and addicted to our phones by design… and the powers that be want us to feel powerless…
Last night we were out to dinner at a very lovely restaurant and a young couple came in and sat next to us. They were probably in their mid 20’s or so. It was a small/quaint restaurant with few tables. My husband and I noticed the gal had her cell phone in her hand almost the entire time… even while eating. The guy had his phone on the table but “seemed” more attentive to her. Left the restaurant thinking how rude our society has become and how consumed we are as people in general.
While it is important to be aware of our world, help however we can, and of course not completely ignore it… it’s also important we protect our peace.
Over the past few years we have all been through a lot and I have even caught myself letting fear and anxiety creep in. Our world is so broken and I have been going down rabbit hole after rabbit hole. We can scroll and laugh at a funny video and then the very next post is a video of something horrific happening on the other side of the world. Talk about polar opposites in a split second! No wonder it attacks our mental health.
God tells us to FEAR NOT. I don’t want to be controlled by fear anymore. Finding myself handing it all back to God because He is the only one who can handle all of it.
Haven’t watched the news in several years… but see enough on social media. Really focusing on what I can control… which isn’t much in the grand scheme of things. I’m standing in the gap wherever and whenever I can and feel called…
The biggest work I can do right now is within the walls of my own home. So, I’m working on slowing down to be the very best mother and wife I can be for my family. I can control this and am choosing to be better at it.
Remember, there is only so much you can control!
